Something to Squeal About! Festival Honors ‘Deliverance’ 40th Anniversary
We squealed like pigs when we read the e-mail announcing the first Chattooga River Festival, which will be held in Clayton, Ga., and commemorate the 40th anniversary of “Deliverance” — pretty much the best outdoor adventure film ever made.
Many contributors to The Adventure Post can quote most of the movie, so this gathering touches the heart. We might even enter a team in the festival’s Banjo Boogie Adventure Race on June 23.
You definitely don’t want to miss this event, considering the outstanding schedule of events, including activities with “Deliverance” cast member Ronny Cox. We scanned the schedule and here’s some stuff that stood out (text is from the CRF website):
Friday, June 22
4:30 p.m. Nationally renowned artists Jake Fernandez, Linda Chapman, Ling Chang, Karin Schaller, Peter McIntosh, Libby Mathews and Dwayne Thompson will present work that relates to and reflects on the theme of deliverance, redemption, salvation. Come see their work and read their stories.
7:30 p.m. Ronny Cox, one of the original cast members from the movie “Deliverance” is an artist who wears a variety of hats – from actor to musician to family man…Ronny Cox showcases a wonderful acoustic mix of folk, western, jazzy-bluesy and storytelling to make for some incredible entertainment!
8 a.m.-6 p.m. Experience the river first hand by taking a whitewater rafting trip! Contact one of our three area rafting companies for further details and to make reservations: Nantahala Outdoor Center, Southeastern Expeditions, Wildwater Ltd.
10 a.m.-8 p.m. Chattooga Belle Farm Music Festival + Festival Village. Among the musicians confirmed to perform are: Sol Driven Train, The Mosier Brothers, Shannon Whitworth, Nitrograss, Michelle Malone, Conservation Theory, Heather Luttrell and Timberline.
Contestants in our “Dueling Banjo” Competition will perform for judges between bands and a winner of that competition will be announced prior to the final professional band’s performance.
3 p.m.-5 p.m. Meet Ronny Cox in person as he signs copies of his new book: “Dueling Banjos: The Deliverance of Drew.”
Sunday, June 24
9 a.m.-Noon Tallulah Falls Lake — Makeshift Boat Race. Make-shift boats can be made by using a variety of materials such as cardboard, PVC pipe, duct tape, horse troughs, inflatable balls, plywood, 2×2’s, nails, saws & hammers. Bring your pre-built vessel straight to the Tallulah Falls Lake and compete for the winning trophy!
9 a.m.-1 p.m. Tallulah Gorge State Park – Guided Historic Hike to Gorge Basin
8:30 p.m. Tiger Drive-In Showing of “Deliverance. “The Tiger Drive-in is family owned and operated and has been a North Georgia tradition since 1954! Come and enjoy the thrills of “Deliverance” from the comforts of your car or on a picnic blanket beneath the stars.
